How to pay your AMEX card balance

The agreement between American Express and HSBC Expat comes to an end on 30 September 2022 and from this date, HSBC Expat will no longer settle your American Express card balance. Therefore, you will be required to make arrangements to pay American Express directly.

Please follow the step-by-step instructions below. Standard fees and charges will apply – see the HSBC Expat Tariff of Charges and the Digital Banking T&Cs.

Pay no fees on all international payments made via our mobile banking app until 31 March 2023.

How to pay your AMEX card on mobile and internet banking

Login to your Expat mobile banking account
Select Pay and transfer
Select Pay a UK Bill
Select the From account as the account you’d like to debit – this should be your HSBC Expat GBP account.
Under To, select Your payees and Add a new payee
When prompted, select New payment to a company and press Next
From the list of companies, select AMERICAN EXPRESS 15 DIG REF 3742 and click Continue
Enter how much you wish to pay
Under Company reference, enter Amex
Under Your reference, enter your 15-digit American Express Card Number
Press Continue
Review your details and click Confirm to make the payment.

Login to your Expat Internet banking account
Select Pay and transfer
Select the From account as the account you’d like to debit
Under the To option, select New payment to a company
From the list of companies, select AMERICAN EXPRESS 15 DIG REF 3742 and click Continue
Under Company reference, enter Amex
Now enter the amount you wish to pay
Under Your reference, enter your 15-digit American Express Card Number
For Recurring, select No
Complete the Additional Security Required, review all the details you have entered and then confirm the payment.

Login to your Expat mobile banking account
Select Pay and transfer and then Send money internationally
Select the country you’re paying to. This will be Germany if you are paying an Amex Euro card starting 3743 or United States of America if you are paying an Amex USD card starting 3745.
Select Continue
Select the From account as the account you’d like to debit – this should be your HSBC Expat Euro or USD account as appropriate.
Enter how much you wish to pay and press Continue
Click on Add a new Payee
Now enter the IBAN as follows:

For Amex Euro cards starting with 3743, enter DE28512305000018099205

Once you enter the IBAN It will automatically confirm the beneficiary bank as being Standard Chartered Bank AG

For Amex USD cards starting with 3745, when prompted what bank details do you want to use, select Payee’s routing number and account number and press Continue

Enter Routing number 026002561 – it will confirm the bank as being Standard Chartered Bank

Now Enter the Account Number 3582022339001

Enter the Payee’s Full name as American Express Services Europe (you’ll also need to enter the bank address - Standard Chartered Bank, 1095 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY, 10036)
Click Verify payee information
Review payee details and Add Payee
Enter your 15-digit American Express Card Number as a payee reference and click Continue
Review your transfer and confirm.

Login to your Expat Internet banking account
Select Pay and transfer
Select the From account as the account you’d like to debit
Under the To option, select New transfer to a person – do not select New payment to a company
Select the country you’re paying to. This will be Germany if you are paying an Amex Euro card starting 3743 or United States if you are paying an Amex USD card starting 3745.
Under Payee full name, enterAmerican Express Services Europe.
Under Bank Details, enter the country/region. This will be the same as you entered in Step 5, i.e Germany if you are paying an Amex Euro card starting 3743 or United States if you are paying an Amex USD card starting 3745.
Under Account number/IBAN, enter the following details as appropriate:

For Euro cards starting with 3743, enter DE28512305000018099205

For USD cards starting with 3745, enter 3582022339001
Under Bank search, enter the following details as appropriate:

For Euro cards starting with 3743, enter SCBLDEFX and select the first option from the list

For USD cards starting with 3745, enter 026002561 and select Standard Chartered Bank, New York
Please select or deselect if you would like to add this beneficiary to your payee list
Now enter the amount you wish to pay.
Under Who pays the fees, select that You’ll pay all the fees.
Select reason for transfer, e.g. Credit Card payments
Under Payee reference, enter your 15-digit American Express Card Number
For Recurring, select No
Complete the Additional Security Required, review all the details you have entered and then confirm the payment.
